The Unexpected

Well, there's always so much hoopla about "Teacher Appreciation Week".  Stuff from publishers and teacher resource companies, but they never really appreciate you, they just want you to buy something from them.  Your employer may appreciate you, but if you work in public education these days well,...money is as scarce as water in the desert.

The one thing you can count on are those sweet cards, pictures, and hand-picked or "store-bought on the way to school" flowers.  They usually come with some kind of note from one or two, maybe 5 or 6 students who you've managed to change their lives with one school year.  They bring a tear to your eye, and you may even get a hug from them.

I can't think of a better present to lift my spirit, renew my vigor for teaching, and to bring a smile to my face.  These little notes and thoughts are what bring me back each year to my job even though my paycheck has gone down for the last five years.

So, here's to hoping there are some sweet notes and beautiful flowers on your desk tomorrow morning!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to my fellow hard-working teachers around the world!
